Master Sheng-Yen Died

Though I haven’t studied many of his teachings, I’m saddened by the death of Master Sheng-yen.  I read an article about him in Shambhala Sun (which is on their blog here) and then an article in Tricycle (which they have posted here).  As it happened, I bought two of his books today at a used bookstore before I knew he died.  Though I wasn’t deep into his teachings, I found the few words I heard from him profound.  I give my condolences to any of his students because I am sure they are feeling a profound loss today.

His final teaching.

Busy with nothing, growing old.
Within emptiness, weeping, laughing.
Intrinsically, there is no “I.”
Life and death, thus cast aside.

Sincerely,

Ben
